“When it comes to improvisation, I like to think that there’s three elements at play:
Head, Ear, Hand.
And reaction time, as I call it. And I see “head, ear, hand” as what I call the three pillars of improvisation practice, and relating to reaction time.
So “jazz reacting” is what I call this. And in many ways, improvisation is a process of reacting. And there’s so many ways that we are reacting when we improvise.
Jazz is a process of reacting. Any improvisation is a process of reacting.
And my goal with working through this and thinking about how reaction plays into this was to increase the speed of this process – which decreases the reaction time.”
